Static and dynamic analysis of a spatial catenary

Vanja Travaš, Ivica Kožar

Abstract

The static and dynamic analysis of spatial and in-plane suspended cables is presented. The mechanical behaviour of some structural elements can be described in practical terms by an idealized mathematical model of a suspended elastic cable element. This procedure can be applied on suspension bridges and cable stay bridges for cables subjected to tensile stress. The knowledge of behaviour of such cables is significant for analyzing stability of suspended structures. The nonlinear equation system is used to determine the initial shape of the cable.
