Use of high performance concrete in frame structures

Ivan Tomičić

Abstract

The author recommends the use of high performance concrete in the construction of reinforced-concrete frame structures in seismic areas. Advantages of such use lie in high bearing capacity and durability, as well as in rationality and outside appearance. Expressions for the calculation of reinforcement needed to strengthen piers in areas of plastic hinges are presented. It is recommended that steel fibers should be added to concrete in order to improve significant properties of the structure. An example of dimensioning and verification of plastic hinge ductility is also given.
