Special rail damage at switches

Branko Pollak, Goran Ante Bajić

Abstract

Special type of damage to contact faces of rails, as observed on switches installed within the network of Croatian railways, are described. The passage of axle assembly over a portion of the switching device and over switch portions where rails are not fixed to the base, are presented in more detail. Possible causes of such special damage are presented and the influence of such damage to traffic safety is analyzed. A general testing and monitoring procedure that could lead to more accurate conclusions is proposed.
