Seismic dampers in engineering structures

Angela Nižić, Darko Meštrović

Abstract

Basic principles and problems relating to the design of earthquake-resistant structures are presented in the initial part of the paper. The following seismic dampers are presented: hysteretic damper, viscous damper, self-centred damper, and added-mass damper. An example of seismic design made for the Zečeve drage Viaduct, as based on spectral analysis and time history, is given. It is emphasized in conclusion that forces acting on a structure are significantly reduced by seismic dampers, so that the structure remains in an elastic area after earthquake action.
