Passante Ferroviario railway tunnel in Milan

Davorin Kolić, Antonio Nicola, Anne Brissaud

Abstract

The construction of the Passante Ferroviario railway tunnel in Milan, which links Porta Garibaldi and Porta Vittoria train stations, is presented in the paper. The tunnel route is made of three parts, and the total length is 4,568.00 m. Two tunnel tubes were drilled above the ground water level in alluvial, sandy and gravelly soil. The operation of the drilling machine EPB TBM that was used to drill the tunnel tubes is described. This was the first machine in Europe that was equipped with the chemical foam injection system based on an original solution.
