New approach to the determination of stiffness of carbonate rocks in Croatian karst

Abstract

The development of a new approach to the determination of stiffness of carbonate rocks in Croatian karst is described. The application of this approach will enable a more reliable prediction of deformations in geotechnical structures. Investigations have shown that the stiffness of carbonate rocks is influenced by: geological strength index, velocity of propagation of longitudinal waves, and rock mass stiffness index, and that the stiffness is equal to the product of the rock mass stiffness index, square of the geological strength index, and square of the velocity of propagation of longitudinal waves.
